Peyton Reed Directed two episodes of The Mandalorian wasn’t really planned. Reed directed the second episode and the finale of The Mandalorian Season 2. He was only supposed to direct the second episode of The Mandalorian 2 but when he learned about the details of the finale, he gladly accepted the project. Reed discussed The Mandalorian and volume technology with collider.

The director detailed how he came on board to direct two episodes for the series. He said: “I had gone down to visit [Jon] Favreau on the set of Season 1 Mandalorian because everyone was talking about volume technology. I love Star Wars and I love Favreau, so when it came to season 2, Jon called and said, “Would you like to come down and do an episode?” I said, “Yeah, absolutely.” It was the second episode of season 2, which I originally signed up for and Jon had written a rough script and then I fleshed out the script and we worked on it together.”

Luckily he still had some time to take on the final episode, so he jumped at the opportunity to direct when Favreau told him about it. He shared, “Then that was the first episode we shot for Season 2. It wasn’t the first episode to air, but it was the second episode. It was the first thing we did and they loved it and it had this finale coming up that he just said, “The finale is going to have some kind of big swing.” I was like, “What are you up to?”

He continued, “And he said it was going to be a very emotional episode, and then he explained to me what it was about, and I read the script and I was like, ‘Absolutely, I’ll do this.’ Work had begun on the script and formulation of Quantumania, but it was early days and we had time and I thought, “I can’t pass up this opportunity.”

When Peyton Reed directed The Mandalorian Episodes he has dealt with the volume technology. Reed admitted he’s impressed with it, but isn’t sure if they can use it Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. He said: “I wanted to see how it works and how it can be applied. So I wasn’t exactly thinking it through, but it was definitely in the back of my mind, “We’re going to do Quantumania and we need to bring the Quantum Realm to life. There were things I wanted to do, but I wasn’t sure volume technology was ready for that.”

Ultimately, the director used volume technology for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania since it was practical. He continued, “So it was definitely one of the tools we used in our toolkit and the actors love it because it lets them see a version of who they are [going to] see in the movie. The interactive lighting is great, of course, but it’s great, the actors love it. It’s not always the right tool, but I liked it because we wanted to create all these different parts of the quantum realm that needed to look and feel different. So it was cool to have some that were and some that weren’t.”
