The Edmonton Oilers continue to get points from their games, but that’s not good enough considering they’re going head-to-head in a wide-open Pacific Division. Not only that, but the team constantly inflates early three-goal leads and then fails to finish off the teams in overtime and penalties. It happened again on Sunday afternoon when the Oilers allowed defending Stanley Cup champions Colorado Avalanche to fight back from a 3-0 lead and win in overtime.
Head coach Jay Woodcroft said of the disappointing loss and missed opportunity to pick up two points, “It would be wrong to dress this up in any other way than to say it’s absolutely disappointing.” Sure, the Oilers have only had in their last 15 games conceded a regular loss but they are without a win in the last three games and have now lost fourth place in a row.
Things got off to a rough start for the Oilers on Sunday, with Warren Foegele firing some early penalties in the first half. The Oilers both killed, and Foegele eventually scored the game’s first two goals to make up for his earlier slips. The Oilers extended their lead to 3-0 when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fed Leon Draisaitl to the side of the net. Goals from Nathan MacKinnon and Valeri Nichushkin made it 3-2. Tyson Barrie made it 4-2 before MacKinnon scored again to make it 4-3. Mattias Janmark made it 5-3 and then Colorado scored two more to level it with less than five minutes left in the game.
Mikko Rantanen ended the game in overtime with a 6-5 win in Colorado.
The Oilers need to find out
Even as they accumulate points, the Oilers desperately need to figure out what they’re doing wrong. A team that was once viewed as never being left out of a competition because they can score in heaps is beginning to be seen as one that cannot hold an advantage or capitalize when they should be dominating clubs with their skills in three. On three game.
