Hiram College Grad & State Representative to Keynote Ceremony

Dontavius Jarrells, Ohio House Representative for District 1, and assistant minority leader, will be the keynote speaker for Hiram College’s commencement ceremony on May 13, 2023. Jarrells is an alumnus of Hiram College and a Garfield Scholar who studied political science and economics. After his graduation, he served in various organizations, including the Ohio Legislative Service Commission, Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities, and Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. In 2020, he was elected as state representative to the Ohio House of Representatives and was re-elected in 2022. Jarrells successfully passed several pieces of legislation, including the elimination of discriminatory covenants from property deeds, the removal of derogatory language from the state’s legal code, and bringing millions of dollars back into his district and Franklin County. Hiram College President David Haney praised Jarrells for being an outstanding role model who epitomizes the college’s mission to foster social responsibility and meet the world’s urgent challenges. The commencement ceremony will be held in Hiram’s Martin Field House, with a live stream of the event available for those who cannot attend.

Dontavius Jarrells will be the commencement speaker at Hiram College.

Dontavius Jarrells, Ohio House Representative for District 1 and assistant minority leader, has been announced as the keynote speaker for the Hiram College commencement ceremony on May 13, 2023. Jarrells is also an alumnus of Hiram College, having graduated in 2010 after studying political science and economics.

Jarrells’ journey began when he enrolled in Hiram College as a Cleveland native. The college’s unique academic schedule allowed him to travel abroad and explore his interests in community service. He was a Garfield Scholar, which gave him opportunities to learn about local, national, and global issues.

After his graduation, Jarrells was awarded a fellowship with the Ohio Legislative Service Commission, where he worked with the Democratic House Caucus at the Statehouse. He then served in the Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, where he led equity initiatives for the state’s behavioral health services and advocated for the expansion of Medicaid.

Jarrells was elected as the state representative to the Ohio House of Representatives in 2020, and he was able to pass several pieces of legislation during his first term. He eliminated discriminatory covenants from property deeds, removed derogatory language from the state’s legal code, and brought millions of dollars back into his district and Franklin County. He was re-elected to serve a second term in November 2022.

The commencement ceremony will be held in Hiram’s Martin Field House at 2 p.m., preceded by an induction ceremony for students named to Phi Beta Kappa and a pinning ceremony for graduating nursing students. The ceremony is a ticketed event for members of the campus community, graduating seniors, and their families. A live stream of the event will be available for others wishing to watch the ceremony.
