The NHL Trade Bait Tracker has been updated after Ryan O’Reilly was traded from the St. Louis Blues to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The March 3 trading deadline is just over two weeks away and more moves are expected before that date.
Jakob Chychrun remains at the top of the list as he continues to be scratched for trading related purposes. The same is happening in Columbus with Blue Jackets defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov. Both players stay out until a deal is made or the time limit has passed. This trend is expected to continue as more sellers seek to protect merchandise from injury.
Timo Meier is eliminated from our top 5 because both Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews will make their choices this week. If they choose to waive their no trade clauses, they will level up even higher in the next update.
TO UPDATE: Jonathan Toew’s handling of illness is not traded.

A look at the top trade candidates

Jacob Chychrun: The trading saga between the Arizona Coyotes Chychrun continues. With 2 more years on his contract and an outstanding $4.6M AAV, he’s a great cost controlled top 4D man. At this point, people are wondering if that trade will ever happen and the Los Angeles Kings still remain the best place to land. However, there are rumors that the Boston Bruins are also interested. In 36 games, Chychrun has 28 points on the season.
James van Riemsdyk: The Flyers should move to UFA James van Riemsdyk in the near future. At 33, he still has something in the tank with 22 points in 37 games this season. Interest has increased from several applicants, including the Winnipeg Jets, Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights and Minnesota Wild. I think the Knights are the likely place to land after losing Mark Stone to injury and they need a winger for Jack Eichel.
Vladislav Gavrikov: This 27-year-old defenseman is attracting a lot of attention as rumors have it that the Edmonton Oilers are the most likely landing spot. He has 10 points in 52 games this year and could cement a contender’s top four. Other teams who might play him include the Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. Also keep an eye on the Colorado Avalanche as they have been struggling with blue line injuries all season.
Patrick Kane: When Rangers were traded for Vladimir Tarasenko, Kane wasn’t shy about telling reporters he was disappointed that they were a team he was considering. However, he has yet to agree to waive his full no-move clause. Good news is that Kane claims reports of his injury have been exaggerated. There has been speculation that Kane would only be without the Rangers or Maple Leafs, but judging by their moves, they seem like unlikely targets. Would he give up playing for the Dallas Stars or the Carolina Hurricanes? He has 37 points in 51 games this season.
Jonathan Toews: The 34-year-old Blackhawks captain remains with IR, which only tarnishes his future. He shares the same agent as Kane, so it’s no shock that they will jointly make a decision to waive their no-move clauses this week. Toews has 28 points in 46 games and the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and Carolina Hurricanes are believed to be potential contenders.
NHL Trade Deadline tidbits
- Elliotte Friedman reports that Tyler Bertuzzi cannot be traded while the Detroit Red Wings are in the playoff hunt
- Vitali Kravtsov is available and the New York Rangers are looking for a draft pick for him
- It seems unlikely that Erik Karlsson will be treated because of his contract but he has been snapped at for all the trade talks going on around him
- Dylan Larkin was moved to the bottom of the list, I think the Wings will extend him
- Dmitry Kulikov sounds like everyone’s backup plan once Gavrikov is traded, that’s why he’s in the top 10
