What to do when there’s not enough league-wide news to warrant one? around the league Column, also, is there a little Canucks signing that fans still want to know and deserve to know about? Simply! They dust off the side news headline! As far as I can see the last time we did something like this was in 2021 when Jayce Hawryluk moved to the SHL and was our number one. Good times.
But today we’re bringing it back because we have some certified minor news!
Canucks sign Bednard
Did you look twice when you read that? You’re not alone. You might have hoped that the Canucks somehow convinced the league to let Connor Bedard skip the draft process altogether because he just became the third player in CHL history to score 100 points in consecutive seasons before turning 18 became. Bedard joins Sidney Crosby and John Tavares on that list, but the Canucks have to keep losing games and like the rest of us waiting to see if what feels like destiny for so many in this town actually plays out.
Instead, the news today is that the Canucks have signed goaltender Ryan Bednard to a PTO.
Bednard, 25, has spent this season in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers and more recently with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. Bednard currently ranks second among ECHL goaltenders this season with 20 wins while seventh in the save percentage with .921.
After being drafted 205th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers in the seventh round, the 6’5, 207-pound goaltender is currently in his fifth season as a pro. He has 11 AHL games under his belt and a 5-5-0 record with one shutout, a .900 save percentage and a 3.23 clean sheet average.
With Arturs Silovs currently starting at the NHL level and Thatcher Demko planning to travel with the Canucks on their upcoming road trip, the Canucks have been acquiring AHL backup goalies lately like they’re free candy. Rylan Parenteau was signed at a PTO on February 8 and has one game left to play. Jake Kupsky was re-signed in early December to serve as Silovs’ backup while Collin Delia was promoted to the big club.
Kupsky was injured after Vasily Podkolzin fell hard into his goaltender during backchecking during the Canucks’ game on February 3 and has yet to recover.
