Mangosuthu University of Technology to Continue with Operations during National Shutdown
Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) announced that it will maintain its operations during the planned national shutdown on Monday. The university, situated in Umlazi, south of Durban, has implemented contingency plans to ensure the safety of everyone on campus in case the protest impacts its operations.
MUT’s Director of PR and Branding, Dr Azwi Mufamadi, confirmed that the university had no intention of halting its operations. He also stated that the Dean of Students regularly updates and consults with the Student Representative Council (SRC) regarding matters affecting the student body.
The SRC President, Mazwi Mnguni, has previously declared that the Sasco-led SRC would not participate in the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) protest, and it will be a regular day at the university. Mnguni has also stated that the EFF protest may lead to the arrest of students and that they are distancing themselves from it.
In contrast, at least 100 members of the EFF Student Command organized a demonstration in Durban on Saturday night as a “final mobilization” before the national shutdown.
The Mangosuthu University of Technology’s decision to continue with its operations during the national shutdown is in line with its goal to ensure the continuity of its academic programs. The university’s management is committed to ensuring that the academic year progresses smoothly, despite any external disruptions.
