‘He’s looking for the player’ – Graeme Souness left stunned after Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer escaped a red card for a horror tackle on Leicester’s Wout Faes 1

Marcel Sabitzer somehow escaped punishment for a horror tackle on Leicester defender Wout Faes as Graeme Souness roared that he should have been sent off.

The Manchester United midfielder – on loan from Bayern Munich – made no contact with the ball when he grabbed the Belgian’s knee with his studs.

VAR took control of the 41st-minute challenge but deemed it undeserving of a red card in the 3-0 win for United.

Souness was stunned that no action was taken as he said Sabitzer was ‘looking for’ Waes to leave his mark on him.

Giving his take on the incident during his half-time analysis on Sky Sports, Souness said: “I think it’s a red card. Sabitzer turned on him.

“It’s a classic case, if you try to do someone, you turn your back. If he comes into contact with the ball, what will he do with it? He looks for the player.

“I don’t care what a referee who has never played the game wants to say. It’s a dismissal. It’s a dangerous game.

“If this isn’t a dangerous game, what is? He turned sideways. It’s a classic case of setting yourself up to do someone.

Former Red Devils right-back Gary Neville believes Sabitzer’s reckless lunge was not worthy of a red card.

Speaking on Sky’s comments, Neville remarked: “It’s not a big challenge from Sabitzer.

“He goes high and then walks away, not a pretty one. It should have been a yellow.

“I think VAR would have given him a red if he had followed at that height.

“I think that would be considered a kick rather than a follow through that would have broken his leg.”

Luck was not on Leicester’s side at Old Trafford in the first half after fending off a number of key chances in the early stages.

And they must have regretted their missed chances after Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock in the 25th minute.

Things went from bad to worse for the Foxes just before the hour mark after Rashford doubled United’s lead.

The goal was initially given as offside, but VAR deemed the England international to be onside.

Second-half substitute Jadon Sancho then put United three in the right in the 62nd minute as they headed home an empty net.
