Motte signed here as an unrestricted free agent after spending last season with Rangers. He was scheduled to play against the St. Louis Blues but was informed by the Senators general manager Pierre Dorion going home to wait for a deal when he arrived at the rink a few hours before the game.
The 25-year-old Gauthier, a first-round pick for the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2016 NHL draft, has played 40 games for New York this season. He’s a fourth-row winger and brings a good height at 6ft 4 and 224lbs. He has six goals and nine points with Rangers.
He will make his debut on the road against the Boston Bruins on Monday. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the club put the veteran up front Derick Brassard in a back-to-back situation.

If the Rangers advance through the first round of the playoffs, the Senators will receive a sixth-round pick from New York. Motte is an effective penalty killer and Rangers wanted to bring him back.
“Julien Gauthier is a hardworking, good winger with a big body who regularly goes into the opposition net. His North-South play should be a nice addition to our line-up,” Dorion said on Sunday.
The acquisition of Gauthier gives Dorion some flexibility with its fourth line as of the reporting date. It gives the club some depth to end the season and could be a capable replacement for the resilient winger Austin Watson if it is issued on the due date.
Deputy Captain Thomas Chabot and winger Matthew Joseph played junior with Gauthier with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL.

“You never want to see teammates leave. He’s a big, fast guy who can skate really well. He’s a good guy off the ice and he’ll fit right into this locker room,” Chabot said.
SEE AND WAIT
goalkeeper Cam Talbot has not traveled to Boston and will not play the Carolina Hurricanes until Friday or the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Center on Saturday.
Senators had hoped to have Talbot start Sunday, but after he competed in the full Skate Saturday, it was determined he wasn’t ready. Talbot suffered a groin injury on Jan. 21 against the New York Islanders and has missed eight straight games.
The expectation is Kevin Mandolese will face the Bruins on Monday, but Smith noted he wanted to speak to Dorion before making a final decision.

“(Talbot) can’t play and he won’t play (Montag),” Smith said. “We’re hoping for Carolina or Montreal.”
THIS NOR THIS
The officers take a second look at a hit by the center Tim Stutzle on St. Louis winger Colton Parayko in the first period. He went down hard, and officers double-checked to see if Stutzle deserved a major for determining that the original charge stood… It’s been a rough season for the Senators’ chief exercise therapist Dom Nicoletta. He was hit in the head by a flying puck for the second time this year. Luckily, Nicoletta returned to his post for the second third and had stitches in his ear… Stutzle’s 25th of the season against the Bues was his fifth in his last six games. Only five players in the league have more points than Stutzle since January 1… The Blues were not happy with Watson in the second. He was given two minutes to board Ivan Barbashev at 10:29 of the second with Ottawa out to a 4-0 lead. But the Blues ruined the power play Tyler Tucker dropped the gloves and got an instigator.

OFF GLASS
The deal was announced about 15 minutes before the game and Chabot noted that trades are to be expected as the deadline nears. “It’s that time of year that nobody really enjoys and you’re going to lose some teammates,” Chabot said. “You never want to see that, but it’s part of the game that you can’t control.” … winger Drake Batherson watched for his 200th game on Sunday, collecting an assist on center Shane Pinto’s opening goal. Batherson has 56 goals and 143 points in this stretch. Only three other players have scored more points in their first 200 games: Jason Spezza (57-134-91), Alexei Yashin (76-105-81) and Daniel Alfredson (64-105-169) … Gauthier will wear the No. 77 for the senators. He’s only the second player in franchise history to wear that number. The last player was a defender Joe Corvo … Motte will return to New York on Monday against the Winnipeg Jets … captain Brady Tkachuk extended his points streak to six straight games.
