CBS Colorado Features Mother-Daughter Technical Team in Girls & Science Project

CBS Colorado is featuring the inspiring stories of women working in STEM fields as part of the Girls & Science project during the month of March. The project aims to introduce girls to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Among the women featured by CBS News Colorado is a mother-daughter team, Karyn Diesburg and Ashley, who work in engineering. Karyn works in the technical operations center, where she ensures that photographers and reporters have the support they need to report their stories, even in chaotic times such as breaking news, big storms, and election nights.

Karyn has worked at the station for over 30 years, and she started in front of the camera while in high school. However, she found her passion behind the scenes, where she could see into the control room that put programming on air. She started correcting them live on air, leading her to decide to work behind the scenes.

Ashley, on the other hand, is a newscast director who works with a team to take material from the technical operations center and a producer who has written and put in a vision for a newscast. Her job involves a process called “coding,” where she has to direct a series of cameras as well as media and live sources.

Ashley began as a floor director, where she ran teleprompter for anchors and ensured they were clear on cameras and what was happening next. However, during the pandemic, she took the opportunity to learn how to direct, and now she does the morning show.

Despite starting as a floor director and being told by some that she would never become a director due to her lack of experience in TV, Ashley took every opportunity to direct, which was what she wanted to do.

This mother-daughter technical team is a testament to the fact that anyone can pursue a career in STEM fields, regardless of their background or experience. Girls & Science is an excellent project that introduces young girls to the world of STEM and encourages them to explore the endless possibilities available to them.

Mother-Daughter Technical Team Shares Message of Empowerment

Karyn Diesburg and her daughter Ashley, who work as a mother-daughter team in CBS Colorado’s technical operations center, share a message of empowerment for girls everywhere. Karyn encourages girls to pursue their dreams, even if the odds are against them, and to make their own mold.

Karyn never groomed Ashley to become a newscast director, but she always knew her daughter would be good behind the scenes. Despite facing some naysayers, Ashley pursued her dream and took every opportunity to direct.

Their story is a testament to the fact that anyone can pursue a career in STEM fields, regardless of their background or experience.
