The Five Minute Read is a weekly publication that highlights places to visit, things to do, and people to know in the Greater Lowell area. Dr. Ria Roberts, a geriatric medicine physician at Lowell Community Health Center, is set to receive a prestigious award from the Biomedical Science Careers Program at Harvard Medical School for her outstanding service to others. The Concord River whitewater rafting season, organized by Zoar Outdoor in partnership with the Lowell Parks & Conservation Trust, is set to begin on April 2. The rafting trips cost $99 per person and take place every Saturday and Sunday through April and May. The proceeds from these trips go towards the Lowell Parks & Conservation Trust’s conservation work on the river, which includes the creation of the Concord River Greenway Park, a multi-use recreational trail that provides public access to the river.

Geriatric Medicine Physician, Dr. Ria Roberts, to Receive Prestigious Award

Dr. Ria Roberts, a geriatric medicine physician at Lowell Community Health Center, will be awarded the 2023 George H. Kaye Alumni Award for Outstanding Service to Others from the Biomedical Science Careers Program at Harvard Medical School on April 1. The Biomedical Science Careers Program (BCSP) provides support and mentoring for underrepresented minority students from around the world who aspire to pursue careers in medicine, health, and biomedical sciences.

Dr. Roberts, who is originally from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. She underwent her internship and residency training in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, and then completed her fellowship in geriatrics at the Harvard Medical School Multicampus Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program.

At LCHC, Dr. Roberts is currently serving as both a geriatric primary care physician and consultant, and is actively developing a unique geriatric clinic, aimed at serving the most vulnerable and underserved populations of the health center.

Mason Jar Lantern Craft for Teens

Teen Librarian Emily Leggat from Tewksbury Public Library will host a one-hour YouTube tutorial on creating mason jar lanterns. The event, taking place on March 30 at 3:30 p.m, is open to students in grades 6-12, and participants must have a glue gun or other choice of adhesive. A list of required supplies will be provided upon registration, which can be done through the library’s website. Whitewater Rafting Season on Concord River Begins April 2

The Concord River whitewater rafting season is set to commence on April 2, with trips taking place every Saturday and Sunday through April and May, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The rafting trips are run by Zoar Outdoor in partnership with the Lowell Parks & Conservation Trust, at a cost of $99 per person. The proceeds from these trips go towards the Lowell Parks & Conservation Trust’s conservation work on the river, which includes the creation of the Concord River Greenway Park, a multi-use recreational trail that provides public access to the river.

Zoar Outdoor has been organizing commercial raft trips on the Deerfield River in western Massachusetts for over 30 years, while the LP&CT has been offering rafting and kayaking trips on the Concord since 1991.
