Celebrating Women of Distinction.

Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania is set to recognize the achievements of two local women who have made significant contributions to their respective fields. The Awards of Distinction event will take place on May 10th, and this year’s recipient of the Joyce M. Murtha Excellence in Community Service Award is Melissa Radovanic. Gold Award Girl Scouts honorees will also be announced at the event.

Emily Ruffing, the Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator for Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania, said that the event celebrates the Girl Scouts movement’s mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character. The event aims to build critical charitable support and awareness of the positive impact of Girl Scouts in their communities.

Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania is set to recognize the achievements of two local women who have made significant contributions to their respective fields. The Awards of Distinction event will take place on May 10th, from 5 to 7:30 pm, at PPG Science Pavilion in the Carnegie Science Center located at 1 Allegheny Ave, Pittsburgh.

Emily Ruffing, the Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator for Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania, said that the Awards of Distinction event will honor inspirational women who are outstanding leaders in their fields. The event celebrates the Girl Scouts movement’s mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character.

The event features Women of Distinction awards that honor leadership excellence across various sectors, including Joyce M. Murtha Excellence in Community Service Award and two awards for exceptional Gold Award Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts focus primarily on leadership, so it’s a great opportunity to honor these women who can inspire girls to follow in their footsteps.

This year, the Awards of Distinction event will recognize 12 women who have made exceptional accomplishments in their respective fields and have served as role models to Girl Scouts. The women represent the banking, business and entrepreneurship, civil and canon law, communications, finance, health care, human resources, government affairs, philanthropy, social impact, corporate law, and nonprofit sectors.

The honorees were chosen by a committee of 30 corporate volunteers from a variety of sectors throughout the region. Lisa M. Bittner, vice president, and senior trust officer, director of trust services at Somerset Trust Co., is among the women being recognized. She said that being a Girl Scout taught her about developing friendships, organization, finances, teamwork, compromise, and leadership. Bittner is surprised and honored to be named a Woman of Distinction, and she hopes that receiving this recognition helps inspire other women to reach for their dreams and goals.

The networking event will include an awards ceremony with remarks from honorees, followed by a celebration reception with hors d’oeuvre stations and an open bar. The signature event builds critical charitable support and awareness of the positive impact of Girl Scouts in their communities.

Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania Celebrates Melissa Radovanic, the 2021 Joyce M. Murtha Excellence in Community Service Awardee, and Gold Award Girl Scouts

Melissa Radovanic, the assistant manager of commercial, distribution, and collection for RDM Johnstown, is this year’s recipient of the Joyce M. Murtha Excellence in Community Service Award. Radovanic is also the president of Discover Downtown Johnstown Partnership, and her award recognizes her outstanding contributions to the community through service, philanthropy, and leadership.

Radovanic said she is flattered and honored by the recognition and that an award in Mrs. Murtha’s name is such an honor. She added that the Girl Scouts’ mission of bringing dreams and life together to create a better world is crucial in inspiring young girls to discover their own strengths and be themselves.

The Awards of Distinction event will honor two Gold Award Girl Scouts whose Gold Award projects were exceptional in terms of sustainability and either community impact or promoting the welfare of others.
