Smith was found dead with a head injury on Sandy Run Road in Hampton County in July 2015. Investigators initially believed Smith had been hit by a vehicle while standing outside his own vehicle that had run out of gas.

Smith’s mother, Sandy, has recently launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for an independent autopsy of her son’s body, hoping to find answers to her son’s death.
