Alstef Group to Upgrade Sofia Airport Baggage System

Alstef Group, a French company, has secured a contract to upgrade the baggage handling system (BHS) at Bulgaria’s Sofia Airport. The $11m agreement will see Alstef Group supply, install and maintain a new BHS at the airport to provide full self-service check-in and check-in agent-assisted service. The deployment of the new system is expected to help increase passenger handling capacity and manage passenger volumes diverted from Terminal 1. The airport also plans to rebuild the check-in area in Terminal 2 and add more check-in counters. The project is part of the airport’s overall transformation, for which it is investing €76m by the end of 2025. Alstef Group is “delighted” to have been chosen as the technology partner of Sofia Airport and support the airport’s goal of delivering a more streamlined and enjoyable passenger experience.

French company, Alstef Group, has been awarded a contract worth BGN20m ($11m) to supply, install and maintain a new baggage handling system (BHS) at Bulgaria’s Sofia Airport. The agreement was signed between the airport’s CEO, Jesus Caballero and Alstef Group’s CEO, Nicolas Breton.

The new BHS is expected to facilitate full self-service check-in as well as provide check-in agent-assisted service. The deployment of this technology is expected to align with the pace of traffic rebound and the airport’s development plans.

The airport also plans to rebuild the check-in area in Terminal 2, and in addition, will add more check-in counters. Once completed, the new system will help increase T2’s passenger handling capacity and manage the passenger volumes diverted from Terminal 1.

Jesus Caballero, CEO of Sofia Airport said, “We’re buying a state-of-the-art technology solution that will make us faster and more efficient, and that will benefit our millions of passengers. The project is part of the airport’s overall transformation, for which we are investing €76m by the end of 2025.”

Alstef Group CEO Nicolas Breton said, “Alstef Group is delighted to be selected as the baggage handling system technology partner of Sofia Airport and to support the airport’s quest to deliver a more streamlined and enjoyable passenger experience.”

This is the second recent contract awarded to Alstef Group for a baggage system upgrade project, after Edmonton International Airport in Canada also selected the company as its preferred partner.
