Zero-emission hydrogen could one day completely replace fossil fuels – and a start-up in Germany believes it has the key ingredient to make it accessible to all.

Born on a climate-affected South Pacific island, Vaitea Cowan is a firm believer in green hydrogen technology. She co-founded Enapter more than three years ago.

“I wanted to replace all diesel generators in New Caledonia and all remote areas that don’t rely on dirty diesel,” she says.

“But then, when I realized that green hydrogen could replace fossil fuels, I wanted to be part of that change.”

Green solutions will only be adopted if they are the most economically attractive. And that is our mission to make green hydrogen cost-competitive with fossil fuels.

The company, headquartered in Germany, has used its ion exchange membrane electrolysers in over 100 projects in 33 countries. The technology converts renewable electricity into emission-free hydrogen gas.

Developed faster and cheaper than previously thought possible, the AEM electrolyser is already fueling cars and planes, powering industry and heating homes.

Enapter’s hydrogen generators recently won Prince William’s Earthshot award in the Fix Our Climate category.

What is green hydrogen?

Much of the planet’s hydrogen is trapped in the water. So-called “green” hydrogen can be obtained without emissions. This extraction is based on renewable energy used to power the electrolysis. Electrolysis is the chemical process needed to separate the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water.

Obtaining hydrogen in this way has been criticized for its low efficiency and high cost. However, Enapter says their AEM electrolyser solves these problems and offers a quick and easy way to generate green energy yourself at home.

However, the exact number of days depends on the electricity storage capacity. This amount of water corresponds to half a toilet flush (5 liters) and is eight times less than the water consumption of a dishwasher (20 liters).

Enapter recently joined seven other leading European cleantech companies to announce the formation of a new Cleantech Scale-up Coalition aiming to help Europe become carbon neutral, energy self-sufficient and industrially competitive.

The coalition is joined by Breakthrough Energy founder Bill Gates and Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, both attending the event.

The Cleantech Scale-up Coalition members are companies scaling and industrializing technologies to help Europe become carbon neutral, energy self-sufficient and industrially competitive. Their products and services range from decarbonizing industry and energy with renewable hydrogen to producing scalable low-carbon cement; from the electrification of transport to the recycling of materials and batteries.

By 2050, Enapter hopes to produce 10% of the world’s hydrogen.
