Opening Day may be a little over a month away, but Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider already seems to have made his most important move of the year.
Down at the Blue Jays ahead of their spring training opener next week, Schneider saved a stranger from a scary incident while going out to dinner.
According to a tweet from Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae, Schneider was out with his wife for lunch when Schneider rushed over to help a choking woman at another table. Through the Heimlich maneuver, Schneider was able to save her from suffocation.

What if You have you ever been in Schneider’s shoes?
Of course, while the ideal is never to have to save the life of a choking person, it’s good to know the basic steps should this scenario ever arise.
Here’s how to perform the Heimlich, according to the Mayo Clinic:
- Stand behind the person. Kneel backwards for a child. Place one foot slightly in front of the other for balance. Wrap your arms around your waist. Tilt the person slightly forward.
- Make a fist with one hand. Place it directly over the person’s navel.
- Grasp the fist with the other hand. Press into the stomach, also known as the abdomen, with a quick, upward push—as if you’re trying to lift the person. Apply gentle but firm pressure to a child to avoid damaging internal organs.
- Give five abdominal thrusts. Check if the block has been removed. Repeat as needed.
Should someone choke, the Mayo Clinic suggests using either the Heimlich maneuver (aka abdominal thrusts), a series of back blows to the scapula, or a combination of both.
“Some sources only teach the abdominal thrust,” adds the Mayo Clinic. “It’s okay not to use backstrokes if you haven’t learned the backstroke technique. Both approaches are acceptable for adults and children over 1 year old.”
