Bafta 2023 Highlights: From Batmobile to Drunken Pinocchio 1

Kerry Condon and Cate Blanchett won Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively

German-language war film All Quiet on the Western Front was the big winner at Sunday night’s Baftas, picking up seven awards and breaking the record for most wins for a non-English language film in the process.

The Banshees of Inisherin and Elvis were also successful with four wins each at the event, which was held for the first time at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

But while you might be up to date on who won what, here are some of the clips you might have missed from both the ceremony and backstage.

1. Richard E Grant is the next Batman

Richard E Grant

Well, not exactly. But he did come to the Thames venue in the Batmobile, not least on the advice of Hollywood star Steve Martin. However, Grant chose to ignore another piece of advice from the veteran star — don’t wear white.

In fact, Grant wore white—and then some. Not content with a white tuxedo jacket, he added a dramatic Dracula-style white floor-length cape to make his grand entrance. Unfortunately it was scrapped far too quickly for our liking, but it was fun while it lasted.

Ahead of the event, Grant had vowed not to upset fellow actors and he was true to his word, despite referring to last year’s infamous Academy Awards.

“No one under my supervision will be beaten tonight – except in the back.”

2. Where was Alison Hammond?

Alison Hammond and Dame Helen Mirren

Some viewers on social media thought they’d be seeing more of the star alongside Grant – and as this year’s co-hosts, they made a cute couple, appearing together occasionally throughout the evening.

But the plan was always for the ITV presenter to moderate backstage on some posh backstage sofas (which looked like a slightly more glamorous version of the This Morning set).

Unfortunately, Alison couldn’t persuade Dame Helen Mirren to party with her later, no matter how hard she tried. “I have to get up at six in the morning. I have to fly to Berlin,” explained the actress. No rest for the wicked.

3. Ariana DeBose gave a sisterly salute

Ariana DeBose

Last year’s Best Supporting Actress winner, Ariana DeBose (for West Side Story), performed a medley including Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves with a rap section featuring several of the night’s female nominees.

Scary or cool? You decide. Kerry Condon looked a bit taken aback, Danielle Deadwyler looked very surprised, while Emma Thompson and Jamie Lee Curtis seemed to be really pushing themselves.

4. Kerry Condon couldn’t wait to get back in her seat

Kerry Condon

This year’s Best Supporting Actress Kerry Condon (for Banshees of Inisherin) said backstage that she had a “blackout, weird moment” when she realized she’d won (there was an unfortunate incident when Troy Kotsur’s interpreter accidentally called Carey named Mulligan as the winner instead of Condon before it was quickly corrected).

While being interviewed by journalists, Condon caught sight of a live TV feed in a corner of the press room and saw Banshees writer-director Martin McDonagh take the stage to accept the Best Original Screenplay award. “Oh, go away! I miss it. Hurry up! Shall we listen to this for a minute?” be our guest

Luckily McDonagh paid her tribute (otherwise it might have been a bit awkward).

He described her as “the amazing Kerry Condon, who I first worked with on a play at the RSC 21 years ago.

5. Barry Keoghan chose the wrong color

Barry Keoghan

Condon’s co-star Barry Keoghan was equally delighted with his win for Best Supporting Actor.

“It encourages art at home, we are an island of storytelling. It helps the industry at home tremendously. I mean, 14 Oscar nominations is Irish… and I wear red. Should have worn green!”

He plans to place his Bafta over his late mother’s picture – although he almost left it in the press room and would have to run back to do it.

6. Pinocchio ran away again

David Bradley

Guillermo del Toro received the award for best animated film for his gritty adaptation of the classic children’s fairy tale Pinocchio.

“Is Pinocchio with you?” someone asks backstage. “Yes, but he’s getting drunk somewhere!”

While the famous doll may have gone AWOL, David Bradley – who voices Geppetto – carried a doll of his character with him. A unique plus.

And he even wears his own little Bafta!

7. Austin Butler nods to the Irish

Austin Butler

The Elvis Star-winning best actor was something of a stir as many expected Colin Farrell to pick up his first Bafta for the Banshees of Inisherin.

But he returned to Ireland’s Good Books by revealing that “someone told me the other day they thought I was Irish”. (Although he still sounds a lot like Elvis to us).

“Is Butler an Irish surname?” (sorry we think it’s Norman French).

Upon learning that Elvis may (or may not) have had some Irish connections, he was asked if he felt an Irish connection during filming. “Yeah, that’s all I thought about,” he said flatly.

8. Navalny filmmakers vow to keep name in spotlight

Filmmaker of Navalny

Navalny – a film about the poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny – won Best Documentary. The organizers lamented his absence and that of investigative journalist Christo Grozev, who was unable to attend the ceremony because of “a risk to public safety.”

Activist and journalist Maria Pevchikh said: “The message to the Kremlin is to release Navalny and all political prisoners immediately and to end the war (in Ukraine) immediately.

“Before Navalny went to jail I promised him that while he was in jail I would spend the time climbing the highest mountain and calling his name and screaming and making sure people didn’t forget what he did for my country. I think today’s stage was quite a climb.”
