Natural Farming: Assam's Sustainable Agriculture Drive

The Assam Government is encouraging agri-scientists to conduct more scientific research in natural farming to improve the livelihood of farmers and promote a more sustainable and safer agricultural sector in the state. According to Atul Bora, the agricultural minister of Assam, natural farming systems would be more profitable for the majority of farmers in the state as the cost of production of chemical-based farming is increasing day by day. Bora urged the Assam Agricultural University and other agricultural research institutions in the Northeastern States to provide farmers with appropriate technical guidance in organic and natural farming. Meanwhile, lenders of bankrupt Reliance Capital are concerned about low loan recovery because the two bidders, Hinduja Group and Torrent Investments, are not interested in improving their offers, according to sources.

Atul Bora asked experts to focus on developing a more holistic & safe natural farming management production system

The agricultural minister of Assam, Atul Bora, has advised the scientists of the Assam Agricultural University to concentrate their research efforts on developing a more holistic, sustainable, and safe natural farming management production system. Mr. Bora explained that many areas of the northeastern states, including Assam, have not yet been affected by the use of various fertilizers, insecticides, and other synthetic chemicals.

He stressed the need for scientific procedures that are consistent with traditional agricultural methods for the tribal farmers in hilly areas who have been practicing natural farming for decades. According to Mr. Bora, this will help them increase their output.

Mr. Bora also emphasized the negative impact of climate change on the agricultural sector worldwide while addressing a one-day workshop on the ‘National Mission on Natural Farming’. The event was organized by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Assam in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. He urged agriculture officials to focus on developing long-term agricultural production systems to prevent irreversible damage to the agro-ecosystem.
