Will iPhone 15 Feature Apple’s Reverse Wireless Charging Technology?
Reverse wireless charging has been a staple of some of the best Android phones for many years, but it still hasn’t made the leap from the iPhone. Rumors about the possibility have been circulating for years, so far nothing has been proven. However, a new report claims that the feature is still in development and may come to a future iPhone.
Sources speaking to 9to5Mac (opens in new tab) claim that Apple had hoped to introduce reverse wireless charging in the iPhone 14 Pro line – only to miss the deadline for inclusion. Apparently, development is still ongoing along with the various software tweaks needed to make the feature work correctly.
Whether reverse wireless charging will also come for the iPhone 15 is another matter. Apple tends to keep its phones to a fairly high standard, and the development team needs to ensure that reverse wireless charging can meet those standards before the deadline. If not, the feature would be missing for another year.
According to the report, Apple is developing a unique “Wireless Power Out” firmware to support reverse wireless charging. Apparently this is a big part of the testing process and involves managing charge speeds to ensure efficiency and proper heat dissipation.
Presumably this work is why we haven’t seen reverse wireless charging until now, although older iPhones seemed to have all the hardware required.
Teardowns of the iPhone 11 Pro Max revealed that the phone had the hardware that would enable reverse wireless charging, despite the feature itself being disabled. Similarly, FCC filings indicated that the iPhone 12 range would include this feature, and on a limited basis – since plugging in the phone meant it could charge a connected MagSafe battery. There have also been rumors that the iPhone 13 might come with reverse wireless charging, but at the launch of the iPhone 14, it’s still oddly absent.
9to5Mac’s sources also claim that Apple is developing a special interface when reverse wireless charging is active, similar to what is already done with MagSafe. This includes screen animations and sound effects to show you that your phone is charging another device.
It would be very cool if iPhone would finally offer this feature as Android phones have been offering it since 2019 already. While reverse wireless charging speeds are generally quite slow, it gives you the ability to charge other devices in a pinch. For an iPhone, that could mean charging your AirPods, other iPhones, or even non-Apple products you might have on hand.
Unfortunately, sources warned that reverse wireless charging could be further delayed or possibly even scrapped – all because of the challenges Apple faced to make it a reality. However, it’s not entirely clear what the problem really is as it’s something that competing phone manufacturers have been figuring out for quite some time.
It makes sense that Apple would want to offer reverse wireless charging, but should temper expectations for now. Especially since it’s still a problem the company is trying to solve.
