Apple hosts WWDC for AI employee event: “The talent we have is really at the forefront” 1

Earlier this month, Apple held its employee-only artificial intelligence summit as an in-person event at the Steve Jobs Theater. Now a report from Bloomberg offers a few details on what happened (and didn’t happen) at this event as the AI race continues to heat up.

Apple “AI Summit” for employees

As we explained earlier this month, Apple’s AI Summit is an annual event billed as “WWDC for AI,” but it’s only open to Apple employees. This year, the event took place in person at the Steve Jobs Theater for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also streamed live for employees unable to attend in person.

This is an annual event for Apple, but this year it received more attention as companies like Google and Microsoft announced new ways to introduce AI alongside of course the continued development of ChatGPT.

In the latest edition of his A Newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared a brief recap of this year’s AI Summit for Apple employees only. According to Gurman, Apple’s AI chief told employees that “machine learning is evolving faster than ever” and that Apple’s talent is “really at the forefront.”

However, despite that comment, Gurman says he’s not aware of any “game changer” announcements for consumers, nor has Apple previewed anything to compete with the new Bing or ChatGPT.

Earlier this month, Apple held its annual internal summit to discuss ongoing advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence within the company. In a brochure for the event, Apple’s AI chief told employees that “machine learning is progressing faster than ever and the talent we have here is really at the forefront.” While that may be Apple’s belief, I haven’t heard of anything – for consumers – that would bring a game changer out of the summit. For those wondering, I don’t think Apple previewed a ChatGPT/New Bing competitor or anything like that.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Apple will cancel all consumer-focused AI and machine learning announcements for June’s WWDC. The AI Summit is geared towards employees and is likely to focus on general roadmap and strategy discussions rather than specific feature announcements.
