A fat black and white cat named Gacek has become the top tourist attraction in the Polish city of Szczecin.

Gacek has a perfect five star rating on Google Maps. His name, pronounced gats-ekmeans “long-eared” in Polish.

The plump cat has beaten Szczecin’s other tourist hotspots, including the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle, built in 1346.

Gacek has been living in a covered wooden box on Kaszubska Street in Szczecin for several years and, according to local news agency wSzczecinie, gets a lot of snacks from passers-by.

Gacek first attracted international attention when he appeared in a YouTube documentary in 2020. According to Notes From Poland, he even started attracting visitors from neighboring Germany.

Gacek’s previous entry – which, according to Mental Floss, had nearly 2,600 reviews – appears to have been removed, but a new entry has garnered nearly 500 reviews and an average 5-star rating in its first 48 hours.

One reviewer wrote: “I am very fortunate to have come here and met this gentle gentle creature.”

In August 2021, one person said they flew all the way from Oslo, Norway to see Gacek: “As expected, he paid no attention to me, which made the experience perfectly sane. If I could have dinner with anyone in the world I would fly back to feed them in a heartbeat.”

Still, Gacek’s appeal is apparently not universal. One person gave it a one-star rating in 2022 for “stealing a sausage.”

A local animal shelter has urged visitors not to feed Gacek, according to Gazeta.pl.

His box is in front of a shop whose workers act as his de facto guards. According to Notes From Poland, they recently put up a sign asking that all edible offerings to Gacek be kept in sealed containers.
