What’s under the hood of Microsoft’s “new Bing”? OpenAI CEO says it is supported by ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 1

Microsoft recently unveiled its new Bing search engine, which is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and GPT-3 AI models. The new AI models allow Bing to offer more accurate search results and suggest related topics. Bing also has a new Knowledge Graph powered by GPT-3, which allows it to provide more in-depth explanations of topics and answer questions more accurately. Additionally, ChatGPT has been integrated into Bing’s conversational search, allowing users to ask natural language questions and receive better results.

  • Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said that ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 help improve Microsoft’s “new search engine Bing”.

  • The rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot has fueled competition in Big Tech to improve search tools.

  • Google announced its own AI tool called “Bard,” with plans for a public launch in the coming weeks.

What’s under the hood of Microsoft’s flashy “new Bing” search engine?

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said the artificial intelligence company’s megahit tool ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 are helping power the search engine, which Microsoft announced on Tuesday.

Microsoft advertises “new Bing” because it differs from all currently available search engines.

Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi said that the advanced search tool “runs on a new, next-generation, large-scale OpenAI language model that is more powerful than ChatGPT” and that it leverages “key learnings and advances from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5,” according to the Statement on a blog post Tuesday.

While GPT-3 – the language model that ChatGPT is built on – has 175 billion parameters, GPT-4 is expected to have 100 trillion parameters. Microsoft said Bing runs on a “new, next-generation language model,” but didn’t call it GPT-4.

The comments reveal the latest chapter in Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI, which last month said the tech giant would make a “multi-billion dollar investment” in OpenAI’s technology.

The announcement also comes as the battle between big tech giants intensifies to use generative AI technology to improve their search capabilities. At Tuesday’s event, Microsoft also made its much-anticipated announcement that its own search tool, Bing, will now use OpenAI’s technology to speed up searches. Among other things, it will include a chat function that will allow users to refine their search, the company says.

The development marks a turning point for online search, a feature of the Internet that “has remained essentially the same since the last big twist,” Mehdi said at the Microsoft event in Redmond, Washington.

Insider’s Ashley Stewart previously reported that Microsoft is expected to upgrade Bing with OpenAI technology.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has created a popular approach to a technology that computer science and data analytics professionals have long been familiar with. But the eagerness to get the tool accepted by the general public appears to be accelerating efforts to harness the technology for specific applications.

Google, where the sudden rise of ChatGPT is reportedly being dubbed “Code Red” over fears of how it could affect its search engine, unveiled its own counterpart dubbed “Bard” on Monday. CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in a blog post that the company plans to open it to the public soon.
