Vancouver Folk Festival board of directors set to continue fight for event – BC 1

“Vancouver Folk Festival Board of Directors Determined to Secure Festival’s Future in BC”

The future of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival is still up in the air, but the board has decided to keep fighting for its survival.

In a press release, the board says members voted to withdraw a motion to disband the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society. Nearly 300 people attended the virtual town hall meeting last week, many of whom expressed their support for keeping the event going.

“Unfortunately, the outpouring of love for the festival does not change the difficult financial situation we continue to face. The bottom line is that in order to build a sustainable festival, we need funds – not just now, but secured funding streams that will continue for years to come,” the festival organizers wrote in a press release.

The Board encourages people to submit ideas and suggestions to save the festival online through its Thought Exchange tool. It has also launched a fundraiser and volunteer campaign on its website.

Late last month, the board said several parties have offered possible solutions for funding and support since announcing plans to end the festival in early January.

It said an additional $500,000 would be needed to meet the increased expenses this year, and in the past there has been strong opposition to corporate funding to support the festival.

While the board assures that its grants will be kept and that they have a good reputation with previous funders, they want to ensure that the future of the festival is sustainable.
