Pentagon spokesman John Kirby denied involvement in the explosions following Seymour Hersh’s report
The United States was not involved in the sabotage that severely damaged Nord Stream pipelines last year, John Kirby of the National Security Council in Washington told Fox News on Sunday.
“It’s a completely false story” he said, referring to a February report by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh that alleged the White House was behind the Sept. 26 attack on the infrastructure carrying the gas natural from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea.
“There’s no truth to that, Shannon,” he told Fox News host Shannon Bream. “Not one ounce. That’s not true. The United States – no United States proxy – had nothing to do with it. Nothing.”
In a Feb. 8 report, Hersh cited an unnamed source with knowledge of the situation who told him the United States had acted in conjunction with Norway to sabotage the pipelines. The move, according to Hersh, was intended to force Germany to provide Ukraine with military and financial support throughout its conflict with Russia.

Hersh also wrote that explosive devices were placed under Russian gas pipelines by US Navy Seals, with the support of Norwegian agents, in June 2022 under the guise of military exercises.
He added that the decision to do so was made by President Joe Biden after nine months of discussions with US national security officials. In early February 2022, Biden promised to “end” to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if Russia were to start a conflict with Ukraine.
Kirby’s denial of Hersh’s claims comes days after Beijing raised questions about Washington’s possible role in the pipeline explosions.
“Why did the United States change its tune by demanding an investigation into the Nord Stream explosion, but keep quiet after the revelation of American journalist Seymour Hersh?” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin asked Friday.
On Thursday, the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, voted to ask the UN Security Council to open an investigation into the sabotage. Moscow has also called for a Security Council meeting on February 22 to discuss the pipeline attacks.
