The Science of Red Meat 3

The Australian Meat Processor Corporation and Meat & Livestock Australia recently held a day-long summit in Sydney, bringing together nine scientists from around the world to discuss the scientific evidence in support of red meat and livestock production. This event was inspired by a similar science-based event held in Dublin last year, which Beef Central also attended.

The summit was an excellent opportunity for industry leaders, producers, and scientists to come together and discuss the value and contribution of the Australian red meat and livestock industry. MLA’s Managing Director Jason Strong explained that the scientists in attendance were some of the world’s leading brains in this field, including Professor Peer Ederer, Professors Candace Croney, and Neil Mann.

These scientists have contributed to a growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating the immense value and contribution of the Australian red meat and livestock industry. Furthermore, AMPC’s Chief Executive Officer Chris Taylor shared that the Animal Frontiers papers consolidate over 1000 scientific works in support of a balanced discussion on the future of animal agriculture globally. This journal is the official publication of four professional animal science societies, including the American Society of Animal Science, the Canadian Society of Animal Science, the European Federation of Animal Science, and the American Meat Science Association.

Mr. Taylor also attended the 2022 International Summit on the Societal Role of Meat in Dublin, which attracted over 850 scientists from around the world who endorsed the positive role of red meat in our society. This show of faith in the animal agriculture industry is a significant step forward in combating the simplistic anti-meat agenda that is often reported in the media.

Australian red meat is more than just good for consumers. It is produced with an environmentally sustainable system, animal welfare, biosecurity, and more. Meat has been a nutritious feature of meals globally throughout history. AMPC and MLA are committed to promoting and maintaining the role of red meat on our plates and in broader society.
