Sustainable tourism is defined by the United Nations Environment Program and the World Tourism Organization as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, meeting the needs of visitors, industry, the environment and host communities”.
We strive to fulfill our motto where luxury meets responsibility in full, said Ayu Tripathi, Director of Aahana – The Corbett Wilderness. Everyone here believes it is our responsibility to ourselves and to our future generations to do our part for Mother Nature, Tripathi said referring to sustainable tourism.
“Responsible luxury is a liveable currency and must have tangible actions that support its cause,” according to Tripathi.
Simply put, sustainable tourism refers to sustainable practices in and by the tourism industry. It is defined by the United Nations Environment Program and the United Nations World Tourism Organization as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, meeting the needs of visitors, industry, the environment and host communities”.
Tripathi believes it is the duty of the tourism industry to promote sustainability.
“Everyone is trying to be responsible these days. When tourists travel, they seek comfort, but not at the expense of sustainability. In fact, after the COVID-19 pandemic, tourists have understood the importance of sustainable tourism more,” Tripathi said.
She added that India should learn from other countries and see their ways of dealing with waste management.
On the pandemic, Tripathi said the impact of COVID was widely visible on the tourism industry. However, once things started to open up, people started to return to their normal state.
“We can see decent numbers of people flocking to destinations again. The good part is that tourists now choose their stays responsibly and check their habits,” Tripathi added.
Reports suggest that the tourism sector has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it has “bounced back” from various adversities.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism has been allocated Rs 2,400 crore in the Union Budget 2023-24, one per budget document. However, it was later reduced to Rs 1,343 crore, according to the revised budget estimate.
