“Vehicle Fire Causes Southbound Pat Bay Highway to Reopen Single Lane Traffic”
Saanich Police say a single-vehicle crash around 7 a.m. caused southbound lanes to be closed on the Pay Bay Highway before a single lane could be reopened.
When officers arrived at the Pat Bay Highway near Sayward Road, they found a vehicle resting on its side on a utility pole.
“It is believed the driver went off the road and the cause is being investigated,” Const said. said Markus Anastasiades of the Saanich police in an email to CHEK News. “The vehicle also caught fire after the collision, which was looked after by the Saanich fire department.”
The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“Heavy rain this morning led to water accumulation in this area of the highway, which police consider a contributing factor,” Anastasiades said. “We are asking people to drive carefully this morning and drive according to changing road conditions.”
Anastasiades says traffic control has been turned over to Emcon as the vehicle cannot be removed until the power pole has been inspected by either Telus or BC Hydro.
He says traffic will be backed up this morning.
Central Saanich Police tweeted that the southbound lanes have a single lane open.
