“Rumor Mill: iPhone 15 Pro Max to Feature Even Brighter Display”

A new rumor has it that Apple could make the display even brighter in the high-end iPhone 15 Pro Max this year. Currently, the iPhone 14 Pro Max can reach 2000 nits of peak brightness, but this rumor suggests that peak brightness could rise to 2500 nits this year…

iPhone 15 Pro Max with a brighter display?

The rumor comes from the leaker ShrimpApplePro, which has a decent if not perfect track record of accuracy, including 6GB of RAM for all iPhone 14 models. He’s also reported that the iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a “beautiful” new design that uses curved edges, thinner bezels and titanium for the body.

In a post on Twitter today, ShrimpApplePro suggested that Apple could deploy a next-gen Samsung display capable of up to 2500 nits of peak brightness. However, the report is pretty vague for now, with ShrimpApplePro saying this display could “possibly” appear in the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Aside from that, Analyst Ross Young told 9to5Mac that he just hasn’t heard anything about this change. There are a few other ways to increase brightness without necessarily using an entirely new type of display. The company could use a multi-lens array (MLA), a technology that boosts brightness output on smaller displays. It could also remove the display’s polarizer using something called Color on Encapsulation.

9to5Mac’s take

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max both have a maximum brightness of 1000 nits for typical use. When viewing HDR content, this brightness can reach 1600 nits. In outdoor environments, the display can reach a peak brightness of 2000 nits. The iPhone 13 Pro, for comparison, offered a maximum brightness of 1000 nits (typical) and a maximum brightness of 1200 nits (HDR).

If the iPhone 15 Pro Max offers an improved peak brightness of 2500 nits, that’s almost certainly only true for outdoor brightness. In normal environments, the brightness will probably stay at 1000 cd/m² in the interest of battery life and longevity of the display.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether Apple can achieve an increase in screen brightness with this year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max. But if it doesn’t happen this year, it’s clearly sooner rather than later.

My money’s in this 2500-nit display, which will make its debut in an “Ultra” iPhone model next year. Finally, one of the distinguishing features of the Apple Watch Ultra is its brighter display…
