From Hellcat to Demon: The Evolution

Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat’s legacy continues to evolve with its latest releases, including the Super Stock and the Demon 170. The Super Stock is the reincarnation of the Demon with 807 horsepower, while the Demon 170 is the Hellcat’s grand finale with 1010 horsepower and 945 pound-feet of torque. Both models offer impressive quarter-mile times and require unique gasoline blends to unlock their full potential. Dodge plans to produce 2500 to 3000 Demon 170s by the end of the year before closing the Hellcat chapter. These vehicles showcase Dodge’s engineering prowess and continue to solidify the Hellcat Challenger SRT’s place in automotive history.

The latest limited-production Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 salutes its gas-fed past with a 1000-plus-hp send-off that wouldn’t exist without the Hellcat Challengers that melted the pavement along the way. The Hellcat model debuted in 2015 with a 707-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that humbled the Camaro and Mustang and made headlines. The Hellcat-powered Challenger hit 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at 126 mph, rivaling hypercars at a relatively low starting price of around $60,000.

In 2018, Dodge released the Demon with 840 horsepower on 100-octane gasoline, a transmission brake, and the ability to pop a wheelie on a well-prepped track. The Demon’s quarter-mile time (9.65 seconds at 140 mph) initially made it too quick to run in NHRA competition without modification. The 3300 Mopar fanatics could get a street-legal dragster with a factory warranty for $86,390.

Dodge exorcised the Demon after 2018, releasing the Hellcat Redeye in its place. The Demon-sourced engine’s pump-gas tune and reduced airflow capped output at 797 horsepower. The Challenger Redeye hit 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and ran the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds at 125 mph, with its fender flares and extra ponies adding $11,000 to the base Hellcat price.

Now, in 2023, the limited-production Demon 170 returns as Dodge says goodbye to its aging pony car and hello to electric muscle. With over 1000 horsepower, the Demon 170 is the ultimate Challenger. It’s also a metaphorical middle finger to critics who’ve called the brand’s performance philosophy one-dimensional. And it all started with the Hellcat, which took Dodge from 707 to 1025 hp in under a decade.

The Hellcat Saga Continues: From the Super Stock to the Demon 170

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat continues to amaze with its latest releases, including the Super Stock, a reincarnation of the Demon that offers 807 horsepower, four 315-section-width Nitto NTO5R drag radials, and a suspension set up for drag-strip launches. Dodge claims that the Super Stock can complete a quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds at 131 mph and can be purchased for $81,090.

However, the Demon 170, which starts at $100,361, is the Hellcat’s grand finale. With 1010 horsepower and 945 pound-feet of torque, the Demon 170 requires E85 gasoline to unlock its potential. The car comes with a strengthened driveline and Mickey Thompson ET Street R drag radials, and an improved transmission brake pairs with the ability to adjust torque for each shift. The optional aluminum and carbon fiber wheels save 25 pounds but add $11,495 to the bill.

The Demon 170’s quarter-mile claim of 8.9 seconds at 151 mph is so fast that the NHRA requires a parachute, which Dodge will offer through Mopar performance. Dodge plans to build 2500 to 3000 Demon 170s by year’s end before closing the Hellcat chapter.

These latest releases of the Hellcat Challenger SRT are a testament to the engineering prowess of Dodge, and its legacy continues to be written.
