Rishi Sunak is widely expected to conduct a small cabinet reshuffle this morning.
The Prime Minister must appoint a new Tory leader after the sacking of Nadhim Zahawi more than a week ago.
However, it is believed the reshuffle will go beyond a single appointment with the Prime Minister, who is said to be planning changes in a number of ministerial roles. The Telegraph takes a look at who could switch roles.
Andrew Mitchell
Mr Mitchell was one of a few people linked to the vacant Tory leader post.
The Development Secretary was asked in the media roundtable this morning if he would like the job of leader of the Conservative Party.
He told GB News: “Well these are matters well above my pay grade and they are matters of the Prime Minister.
“But I am indeed very fortunate to be doing a job that I have done before and I love the international development job very much and I will do my best, especially today, to make sure Britain puts its shoulder to the wheel and we save as many lives as we can from these poor people affected by this disaster in Syria and Turkey.”
Penny Mordaunt
Popular with party activists, Ms Mordaunt has impressed in her current role as leader of the House of Commons with her weekly appearances on The Dispatch Box.
However, it is believed that she does not want the vacant chair position.
Brandon Lewis
A former leader of the party, Mr Lewis, has also been touted to replace Mr Zahawi.
However, The Telegraph hears from friends of the backbencher that he feels he has already fulfilled that role – he was chairman for 18 months from 2018-2019).
An ally said that while Lewis finds the speculation “flattering,” repeating the past “never works.” The search continues. Anyone want to be leader of the Tory party?
Dominik Raab
Asked on Tuesday morning whether Rishi Sunak should use the reshuffle expected today to remove Dominic Raab from the cabinet, Mr Mitchell said: “No.
