Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has expressed concern that Canada’s healthcare system is not living up to its promises. He believes that the system should be able to provide Canadians with the care they need in a timely manner, and that it should focus more on preventative health. Trudeau also believes that healthcare funding should be improved and that the system should be better managed. He has promised to work with provinces and territories to improve the system and make sure it is meeting Canadians’ needs.

Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that Canada’s healthcare system is not delivering on its promise and he plans to allocate billions more in funding.
Trudeau said emergency room wait times have become dangerously long, people are waiting too long for necessary surgeries and millions of Canadians are without a family doctor.
“For generations, public health has been a core part of what it means to be Canadian. It’s based on the promise that no matter where you live or what you earn, you’ll always get the healthcare you need. But right now, our healthcare system isn’t delivering on that promise,” Trudeau said.
“Canadians deserve better,” he said.
The Trudeau Liberal Party government has unveiled a new health-care funding bid that would redirect Ottawa’s Canadian dollars ($146 billion) over the next 10 years to the provinces and territories that oversee the country’s health care system.
The government has set terms for the additional funding by asking for commitments to improve health data collection and digital medical records. Prime Ministers have long been asking for more money and pressure mounted as the pandemic took a further toll on the healthcare system. Burned out, understaffed health workers and emergency rooms couldn’t keep up with demand. About a quarter of the supply, CA$46 billion (US$34 billion), is new money.
Canadian provincial ministers say the offer will increase the federal share of healthcare costs to 24 percent next year, well below the 35 percent the provinces and territories were asking for.
Still, most prime ministers appeared ready to accept the offer, although they promised health talks were not over.
