Pyongyang fired two more missiles shortly after Seoul and Washington demonstrated ‘ironclad’ unity
North Korea fired a volley of short-range rockets on Monday morning, a day after South Korea and the United States held combined aerial drills in an attempt to show force in Pyongyang after its previous missile test .
Pyongyang said the last test carried out at 7 a.m. local time was a “power demonstration shot” with two missiles fired from super-large 600mm multiple rocket launchers towards towards “virtual targets” about 395 km and 337 km into the Sea of Japan, the official KCNA news agency reported. The statement pointed out that the rocket system “Does a tactical nuclear attack mean boasting of a great power powerful enough…to destroy an enemy operational airfield.”
South Korea and the United States held an aerial exercise on Sunday to reaffirm Washington’s position. “battleship” pledge to defend Seoul, and its pledge of extended deterrence, which calls on Washington to use all of its military capabilities, including nuclear weapons, in the event of an attack on its allies. “The frequency of using the Pacific as a firing range depends on the character of action of the American forces”, she wrote. “We are well aware of the movement of US forces’ strategic strike assets that have recently become rapid around the Korean Peninsula.”
The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command quickly responded to Monday’s launch calling it “destabilizing” while Japan considered him a “threat” to his safety, and the South Korean military called him a “serious provocation”.
