New Apple leak reveals drastic MacBook Pro decisions 1

“Apple’s Latest Leak Shows Major Changes Coming to the MacBook Pro”

Apple’s recently introduced MacBook Pro models may offer a performance boost over the previous generation, but nothing in the package can be classified as “new.” I would argue that they are mid-cycle S upgrades rather than the next generation of professional macOS laptops.

What could Apple be planning for this next-gen?

Update: Tuesday, February 7th: Another area where the new MacBook Pro models will stand out will be in the next iteration of Apple Silicon. While the jump from the m1 family to the M2 family has offered around 20 percent increases across the board, both use 5nm technologies.

Apple is expected to move to a 3nm process with the M3 family, joining the rest of the competition, notably Samsung. The South Korean company reportedly took a significant step today by reducing orders from its legacy chip designs to focus on 3nm and its use in its Exynos chipset.

The MacBook Pro’s move to 3 nm should reduce the chipset’s power consumption, improve performance and reduce its physical size. These gains should be far greater between M2 and M3 than between M1 and M2. Apple will no doubt be ready to comply in the near future.

Korean publication ET News, which regularly monitors the supply chain, reports that Apple has been working hard to source OLED display panels in sizes suitable for the iPad family. Today’s report highlights two more physical display sizes in the 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. In other words, they’re perfectly sized for the professional MacBook Pro laptops.

Apple has been hard at work adding microLED displays to its portfolio, but it’s expected to start with a smaller display like the Apple Watch before something more expansive. A “half-way house” of an OLED screen would close this gap well with the currently used LCD-based “Liquid Retina XDR” displays.

A quick look at Apple’s recent software movement to bring iPadOS and macOS closer together reveals that the clunky, mouse-based workaround is preventing many apps from moving from the tablet to the desktop alternatives. The addition of a touchscreen, something Apple has long pushed back on, is inevitable in the next few years.

A touch screen. A new display technology. Maybe even some cameras under the glass to leave the island crop behind.

If Apple is going to make a splash with the next MacBook Pro, then it’s certainly been holding back enough toys to pack a punch when it’s done.
