‘MLB The Show 23’ Honors Negro League Legends with Additions of Buck O’Neil, Rube Foster and Satchel Paige
Negro League players are coming to MLB The Show 23 for the first time.
Sony announced Monday that eight Negro League legends will be included in a new game mode called Storylines that will “expose new generations of baseball fans to these historical figures and their tales of triumph over adversity.”
Here is the new trailer.
The eight Negro League players available in Storyline mode are Buck O’Neil, Hank Thompson, Hilton Smith, Jackie Robinson, John Donaldson, Satchel Paige, Rube Foster, and Martín Dihigo. Players can choose one of these players and embark on a narrative journey through their lives that includes short informational videos. In the end, you actually get to play as one of the Negro League Legends in some of the most important moments of their career. These players will also be available in other game modes.
Sony has wanted to include Negro League players in The Show for a number of years, according to the official PlayStation Blog.
“The Negro Leagues are an important part of baseball and American history, with iconic figures nowhere near as well known as other baseball players of the era,” said Ramone Russell, product development communications and brand strategist at Sony, via the PlayStation Blog. “We thought about bringing the Negro Leagues to MLB The Show for years, but we had to figure out how to do it right for an interactive medium.”
The inclusion of these players and their Negro League team is made possible through a partnership between Sony, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and NLBM President Bob Kendrick, who commentated on the player informational videos.
MLB The Show 23 is out March 28th.
