EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The suspect in a shooting that killed three Michigan State University students and injured five others had a note in his pocket threatening two schools in New Jersey, police say.
According to the Ewing Township Police Department, Anthony McRae, 43, had a history of mental health issues and local ties to Ewing Township, located near Trenton, New Jersey.
When McRae was found by Michigan police, officials said he had a note in his pocket that “indicated a threat to two public schools in Ewing.”
Michigan State University police announced early Tuesday morning that the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Public schools in Ewing were canceled Tuesday “out of an abundance of caution.”
New Jersey police said they determined the incident was isolated to Michigan and there was no threat to schools in Ewing.
McRae has not lived in the Ewing area for several years, according to the Ewing Township Police Department.
A search warrant was executed at a Michigan home linked to McRae, but officials did not share the home’s address.
All eight victims were Michigan State students.
