Welcome to a new NPR series where we shine a light on the people and things that make headlines — and the stories behind them.

The 48-year-old sparked outrage online when it was said he was dating a 19-year-old model, as part of his long-standing relationship history.

Who is he? You probably know him as a bona fide Hollywood movie star, with a career that spans decades and has garnered numerous award nominations (and sort of, just one Oscar). But alongside his work, DiCaprio’s personal life has come under constant scrutiny.

  • Documented most succinctly in this now infamous chart, all of his high profile relationships have been with women under 25. Her last relationship, with actor and model Camila Morrone, ended last August, shortly after she turned 25.
  • If there are two things people love, it’s observing patterns and having those observations confirmed. So you can imagine how the internet jumped when images suggesting a “romance” between DiCaprio and 19-year-old Israeli model Eden Polani surfaced last week (although the tabloids say “sources close to DiCaprio” later denied these claims.)
  • Then, in the same breath, a Twitter trend focused on aging male celebrities went viral, with DiCaprio apparently being the catalyst. Documenting “twink death” (otherwise known as aging), the original tweet juxtaposed a photo of Leo in his early 20s to him in his mid-40s. Somehow, her face hasn’t retained the same elasticity and childlike charm it had decades ago. Who would have thought?

What is the problem ? The rapid talk this week reflected not just a man’s amorous tendencies that many find questionable, but a societal obsession with age.

  • As a lifelong celebrity, Leo has aged in the public eye and documented every part of the process for everyone to speculate. Society seems to be acutely aware of the power and importance that young people possess. So if you’re conditioned to believe it’s one of the most important things in life and you don’t have it anymore, maybe the best thing to do is surround yourself with it (the models on a yacht can surely do the trick.)
  • Gender also plays into this cultural discourse. After an appearance at the Grammys last week, Madonna, 64, came under heavy criticism for appearing to have undergone cosmetic procedures, with many saying she looked “unrecognizable”.
  • This cultural phenomenon reverberates into our consciousness before aging has even begun: Mashable reported last month that the latest trend on Tiktok to obsess over anti-aging is the new way of selling products like serums, anti-wrinkle devices and cosmetic procedures such as prevention. Botox to people in their early twenties or even younger.

DiCaprio’s dating history has made him the butt of many jokes.

What are people saying?

Madonna in an Instagram post responding to the comment about her appearance:

Once again I am caught up in the glare of ageism and misogyny that pervades the world we live in. A world that refuses to celebrate women over 45 and feels the need to punish her if she continues to be willful and hardworking. and adventurous.

I’ve never apologized for any of the creative choices I made or how I looked or dressed, and I’m not going to start. I have been degraded by the media since the beginning of my career but I understand that this is all just a test and I am happy to pioneer so that all the women behind me can have it easier in the years To come.”

And right here’s what Twitter needed to say:

So what now?

  • The anti-aging sector of the beauty industry is expected to be worth $120 billion by 2030, according to market research, so it looks like the rabbit hole will continue to deepen.
  • We’re probably looking at a maximum of two weeks before another female celebrity in her 30s or 40s is praised for “aging well” at the Anne Hathaway at Sundance.
  • For anyone worried about Leo’s love life, no need. He was actually spotted with 27-year-old model Gigi Hadid and a 23-year-old actress named Victoria Lamas. Can we talk about growth?
