“A student of mine has scheduled interviews with several technology companies,” says Bloom. “But once the hiring freezes started, she withdrew from everyone — including those who were still hiring.”
Doable tech recruits are actually opting for reputedly more secure profession paths somewhere else. Occasion weighty tech is experiencing a hiring freeze, many alternative place of work industries nonetheless have ability shortages. “Current students know that a lot of people who got hired last year got fired,” Bloom provides. “While the tech industry is still viewed as a top employer, its star is definitely tarnished.”

Now you might be able to bring in a few candidates – although there are still a lot of tech vacancies in the UK.”
One startup boss already profiting from the mind drain from weighty tech staff to smaller firms is Laurent Descout, CEO and founding father of Barcelona-based fintech Neo. “What big tech lost, startups gained,” he says. “Before these layoffs, Big Tech was able to soak up all sorts of talent on the market, offering high salaries, tremendous benefits, security and the opportunity to work for a household name. But workers are now questioning their stability – they are looking to emerging companies rather than the industry giants.”
With Large Tech not providing an entire life task, tech staff are actually rethinking what they would like out in their careers, in line with Descout. “There is a growing realization that playing a larger role and receiving significant equity in a small company can be far more fulfilling than just being a small cog in a large machine at a larger technology company. We have more applications from high-level, experienced and qualified employees than ever before.”
