Blue Jays manager John Schneider saved a life on Saturday and was quickly rewarded.
While eating with his wife, Schneider performed the Heimlich maneuver on a choking woman at a restaurant in Dunedin, Florida a few weeks ago after realizing that no one else was around. the customer’s table didn’t know what to do.
“Right place, right time,” Schneider told reporters on Sunday. “Either you help me or you don’t and I decided to go see if I could help.
The 43-year-old manager revealed he hadn’t practiced the rescue maneuver since sixth grade.
Schneider, however, “executed a few [of] Heimlichs” and dislodged what the woman was choking on: a shrimp. As a reward, he received a free beer.
“I was a bit shaken afterwards, so the beer came in handy,” Schneider said.
Schneider led the Blue Jays to a wildcard berth after being named interim manager last season. He signed a three-year extension last offseason to remain as Toronto’s captain.
