Jaromir Jagr Makes History: Breaks Wayne Gretzky’s All-Time Goal Record with 1,099th Career Goal
Jaromir Jagr may be just days away from his 51st birthday, but that doesn’t stop the former NHL star from continuing to make hockey history. On Sunday, Jagr scored his 1,099. Career goal, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s combined goal record in professional games and international tournaments.
Jagr, who turns 51 on February 15, scored for Kladno Knights in Sunday’s 5-4 defeat by Trinec in the Czech Extraliga.
Jagr was able to secure the puck from behind the goal before going forward and sweeping it into the back net. The 50-year-old legend’s goal gave Kladno a 4-3 lead after 4:32 in the third period and was his second point of the game. Jagr also set up a goal from former Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec that leveled the game 1-1 in the opening stages.
Gretzky had scored 894 goals during his tenure in the NHL and WHA, and scored an additional 26 goals in international tournaments over the years. According to Hockey Canada, he scored 17 goals in the Canada Cup, six in the World Championship, and three in the World Championship.
Meanwhile, Jagr scored 844 regular-season and playoff goals in his 24 seasons in the NHL. He added 94 goals in the Kontinental Hockey League, 107 in the Czechoslovak and Czech leagues and 55 in international tournaments including the Olympics, World Cups and World Championships.
After Sunday’s game, Jagr has three goals and eight assists in 19 games for Kladno this season.
The two-time Stanley Cup champion has played at least one game a year for Kladno since his last game for the Calgary Flames in 2018. Shortly after ending his NHL career, Jagr acquired a controlling interest in Kladno.
Jagr had planned not to play again this season but changed his mind when Kladno threatened to postpone the second straight game earlier this season after the disease spread in the team’s dressing room. The Knights were down to just 12 skaters and would have faced league disciplinary action if they postponed another game in December.
Jagr then decided to return to the ice and play against HC Bílí Tygři Liberec. In a 3-7 loss, Jagr recorded two assists after 15-10 ice time.
During his legendary NHL career, Jagr had 1,921 points (766 goals and 1,155 assists) in 1,733 games as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, and Dallas Stars and Flames .
