“Devastating Earthquake in Turkey and Syria Claims Thousands of Lives”

Strong earthquake kills more than 3,400 in Syria and Turkey
Origin story: A 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Turkey and Syria earlier this morning, killing more than 3,400 people and injuring thousands more as it collapsed thousands of buildings and trapped residents under piles of rubble.
Authorities feared the death toll would continue to rise as rescuers searched through a tangle of metal and concrete for survivors in a region already reeling from Syria’s 12-year civil war and a refugee crisis.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada stands ready to provide aid after the quake. Global Affairs Canada did not immediately respond to requests for comment about whether Canadians were affected.

Tories remain silent ahead of Ottawa-provinces health summit
Federal Conservatives are silent on whether they support injecting billions more into Canada’s health systems and will not say whether they would uphold a new health deal negotiated between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the ministers.
Trudeau will gather tomorrow with his provincial and territorial counterparts in Ottawa, where he is expected to offer the premier a “large sum of money” to be used for an increase in basic funding and separate bilateral agreements targeting key areas such as basic services .
In exchange for the federal funds, a senior federal official said, the prime minister expects a commitment that none of the new money will be diverted to non-healthcare spending and that provinces and territories will not cut their health insurance contributions.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry is in turmoil as it prepares for a new Russian offensive
Ukraine has sowed confusion over whether Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov would be replaced, raising doubts about the leadership just before a Russian offensive is expected as the first anniversary of the war approaches.
A day after the announcement that Reznikov would be on hiatus, a top ally of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared to backtrack, saying no changes would be made this week.

MARKET OBSERVATION
North American stock markets ended lower today after data showing a resilient US jobs market suggested interest rates may remain elevated for longer as central banks struggle to contain inflation amid relatively strong economic growth.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 34.99 points, or 0.1 percent, to 33,891.02, the S&P 500 fell 25.40
points or 0.61 percent to 4111.08 and the Nasdaq Composite was down 119.50 points or 1 percent to end at 11313.36.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index fell 129.42 points, or 0.62 percent, to 20,628.92. The loonie was trading at 74.37 US cents.

The Great Salt Lake is in crisis and is drying up so fast that it may not function as a living body of water in just a few years, parched by the massive amounts of rain and snowmelt diverted to water crops and flush toilets.
The crisis at the lake has spawned many ideas to fix the problem. A state lawmaker wants to use nuclear energy to pump deep groundwater into the lake. Others have recommended mass killing of forests, saying the state has too many trees that suck up too much water.
How Utah acts is especially important because it’s reliably conservative, said Ben Abbott, an aquatic ecologist at Brigham Young University who is one of the lake’s leading scientific advocates. Their actions are viewed with less skepticism than those of liberal regions like Colorado or California.
