BlueCruise is an SAE Level 2 driver assistance technology, similar to Tesla’s Autopilot. But Ford’s Driver Assist is unique in that it offers a truly hands-free experience – while in “Hands-Free” mode you don’t need to remain in contact with the steering wheel.
Instead, BlueCruise communicates with drivers in a different way. It uses a driver-facing camera and infrared lighting to monitor your eyes and head position to determine if you’re paying attention.
If the system is active and finds you distracted, it will warn you to put your eyes back on the road. The feature is available in Ford and Lincoln models such as the 2023 Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning.
Since BlueCruise was unveiled in April 2021, the feature has provided millions of miles of hands-free highway driving with advanced features including:

- track centering
- Adaptive cruise control
- Speed sign recognition
Ford’s BlueCruise recently took first place consumer reports latest ranking of active driver assistance systems (ADAS) for manufacturers of electric vehicles. BlueCruise’s difference lies in its use of direct driver monitoring systems, which require drivers to keep their eyes on the road while the system steers, accelerates and brakes.
Although BlueCruise helps motorists stay safe on the highway, it helps others in ways they never thought possible.

In a newly released video, a mother and son, who are both deaf and have had in-car communication difficulties, use Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free system in a Mustang Mach-E, allowing them to drive and communicate at the same time for the first time.
Although the video is only 30 seconds long, it has a powerful message. Ford hands-free driving technology can change your life.
In an interview with the family, the mother, Arlene Ngalle, explained how difficult it can be to talk with one hand while driving, but even more difficult to get her son Darien Mikey Lopez’s attention since her eyes have to be on the road .

Prior to hands-free driving, Arlene typically didn’t speak or had to communicate in the car “in a few moments” as a result. You can only imagine how frustrating this experience can be.
She added that deaf people are often mistaken for drunk because the effort it takes to communicate and drive often results in dodging.
After trying BlueCrusie hands-free, Arlene says she’s “more confident” and trusts the car to drive itself without worrying about speed or evasive action.
She’s also more confident that Darien is learning to drive with helpful features that warn you if a car gets too close and self-correct, ultimately reducing the chances of careless little accidents.
Though Arlene says it’s tempting to have a full-blown conversation now, the system will still alert her when her eyes are off the road to protect her and Darien.
