“Google Search to Protect Users from Explicit Images with Blurring Feature”
TL;DR
- Google is expanding its SafeSearch settings to blur offensive images by default in Google Search.
- The purpose is to prevent users from accidentally encountering explicit images.
- The functionality will be rolled out in the “coming months”.
Google is preparing a change to the SafeSearch feature in Google Search. Soon, the feature will automatically blur all explicit images that appear in your search results by default.
To celebrate Safer Internet Day, the Mountain View-based company published a post on its blog to discuss how it keeps its users safe while they’re online. In this post, Google mentions an upcoming change to its SafeSearch feature.
If you’re unfamiliar with SafeSearch, it’s a tool within Google Search that allows you to filter objectionable content from your search results. This content includes things like gore, violence, and pornography.
Google states that in the “coming weeks” it will expand the SafeSearch feature to redact any explicit content that might appear in your results. This new feature is the default whether SafeSearch is enabled or not.
In the coming months, we’ll be adding a safeguard to protect you and your family from accidentally encountering explicit images in search. SafeSearch filtering is already enabled by default for registered users under 18, but soon a new setting will blur explicit images when they appear in search results when SafeSearch filtering isn’t enabled. This setting is the new default for people who haven’t already turned on the SafeSearch filter, with the ability to adjust the settings at any time.
According to the tech giant, this change aims to prevent users from accidentally encountering explicit material.
Don’t worry if you don’t want explicit images to appear blurry in your results. Google says users can adjust settings at any time.
