Google is launching AI chatbot Bard to compete with hugely successful ChatGPT

Google has launched its own artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in response to the hugely successful ChatGPT.

The new conversational AI service will be called Bard and will be made available to “trusted users” ahead of a public release in the coming weeks. Google’s This was announced by the parent company Alphabet Inc. on Monday.

It comes after the release of ChatGPT – an AI chatbot trained on a massive amount of text data, which it uses to generate responses and have realistic conversations.

The chatbot was so successful that earlier this month it was announced that the service had been used by more than 100 million users worldwide in less than two months.

The announcement came Monday in a blog post from Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, who also announced more artificial intelligence for its search engine as well as for developers.

He wrote: “It’s a really exciting time to be working on these technologies as we translate deep research and breakthroughs into products that really help people.

“That’s the path we’ve taken with large language models.

“Bard can be an outlet for creativity and a launch pad for curiosity, helping you explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a nine-year-old, or learn more about the best forwards in football right now and then get drills to develop your skills.”

Google’s Bard service is powered by LaMDA, the company’s AI capable of generating such human-like prose that a company engineer called it sentient last year – a claim the tech giant and scientists have largely dismissed.

Google has been wary of chatbots so far, as LaMDA has been limited to limited testing.

Explaining how Bard would be released, Pichai wrote: “We are initially releasing it with our lightweight model version of LaMDA.

“This much smaller model requires significantly less processing power, which allows us to scale to more users and get more feedback.

“We will combine external feedback with our own internal testing to ensure that Bard’s responses meet high standards of quality, safety and realism in real-world information.

“We look forward to this testing phase, which will help us continue to learn and improve Bard’s quality and speed.”

rival Microsoft is also ready to shake up its own products with AI, including search engine Bing, after making a multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI.

Microsoft has since announced plans to implement ChatGPT into its Teams software, where it will do things like merge meetings, but features will be limited to a premium pricing plan.
