Fire at PG&E substation causes power outages for thousands in parts of Oakland and Alameda, agency says

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — A fire at a PGThe &E substation caused power outages for about 50,000 customers in parts of Oakland and Alameda., according to the agency.

According to PGOn &E’s map, areas shaded in red show thousands without power as of 2:25 p.m. Sunday.

“Due to a loss of power (not PSPS) at, please Oakland Fire is currently responding to a fire and the PGSubstation &E near 50th and Coliseum Way. PG&E reports that approximately 50,000 customers in the city of Oakland could be affected by this outage. Estimated time for restoration is 3:30 p.m.,” the City of Oakland wrote.

In video courtesy of ABC7 News, footage shows passengers waiting to go through security at Oakland International Airport following the power outage.

“Power outage apparently, entire Oakland airport is shut down. No one going through security for almost an hour now,” Matt Ashlock wrote on Twitter.

BART wrote that the Oakland Airport Connector service is running limited service due to the power outage. The agency specifies that shuttles will leave every 18 minutes.

In a statement to ABC7 News, PG&E wrote:

“The safety of our customers and employees is our most important responsibility. We are aware of the major outage in the Oakland area which is affecting approximately 50,000 customers. We are currently investigating the details and will provide more information on the timing of the restoration once we have more information.”
