“Will Sonos Era Speakers be the Answer to Apple HomePod 2 in 2023?”
The rumored Sonos spatial audio-centric speakers will go by the names Era 300 and Era 100, according to a new report.
The speakers, previously leaked and detailed under the codenames Optimo and The Verge, say they’ll be primed to combat the influx of smart speakers into Sonos’ traditional stomping ground.
According to the report, the speakers will be designed to present “immersive spatial audio” music and Dolby Atmos audio of video content. The Verge report states that the high-end Era 300 will feature Wi-Fi 6, as well as Bluetooth and USB-C line-in audio.
The leak claims that the Era 300 will “offer the richest fidelity of any single speaker Sonos has ever released,” which seems to suggest we could see a premium price tag that tops the £/$299 price tag that Apple is suggesting the HomePod (2nd generation) puts in the shade by far. In terms of size, it could be similar to the old Play:5 speaker, previous reports say.
The Era 100, which could be a spiritual successor to the hugely successful Sonos One, would be smaller, according to the report. It also predicts an “SL” option without access to voice mics for voice assistants. Maybe this series would be cheaper than the Era 300.
It would have “up-firing Dolby Atmos drivers” to color the clamor among Sonos fans using the speakers for their home theater needs. According to previous leaks, the design would support this multi-directional audio purpose. 3D renderings showed a bi-angled device with speakers emitting audio in different directions.
These speakers could launch sometime in 2023 alongside a sequel to the Sonos Move – the company’s battery-powered but not-so-portable Bluetooth speaker. The audio giant is also expected to have a pair of premium over-ear headphones in the pipeline.
