Evelyn Louise Conrad Bailey, a resident of Pompano Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2023, at TrustBridge Hospice, in Pompano Beach. She was 96 years old. A funeral service will be held on March 23, 2023, at the First Baptist Church in Marshall, Missouri, with Dr. Mike Parris officiating. Prior to the service, visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends can sign the online guestbook and leave remembrance memorials in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church.
Evelyn was born on August 20, 1926, near Brunswick (Chariton County), Missouri, and moved to Miami Bottoms (Saline County) when she was two. Evelyn grew up as a country girl without running water, indoor plumbing, or electricity. She walked two-and-a-half miles to Bluff Grade School and graduated from Miami High School in 1944. Evelyn enjoyed playing basketball for Miami High School, collecting pecans on the farm, listening to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio, and going to movies at the old Mary Lou Theatre.
Evelyn met her husband, Howard Bailey, in March 1944 at the Rainbow Inn in Miami. They got married on September 10, 1944, in Sedalia, Missouri. Howard deployed with the U.S. Army a few weeks later and eventually went to the WWII Pacific Theater. While Howard was deployed, Evelyn moved to Fort Knox, Kentucky (Howard’s basic training), and worked on base as a stenographer. After that, Evelyn moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and worked for the Veterans Administration.
Following the war, Evelyn and Howard worked at the International Shoe Company in Marshall, Missouri. They established a successful business, Bailey’s Plumbing and Heating, in September 1953, after completing construction of their work building at 450 W. Boyd Street. They retired in 1981 and became ‘snowbirds’ in Pharr, Texas, and Coconut Creek, Florida, from 1990 to 2012. They enjoyed their retirement and cherished their friendships across the country.
Evelyn will always be remembered for her fondness of collecting pecans on the farm, playing basketball for Miami High School, and listening to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio. She was married to the love of her life, Howard Bailey, for 79 years, and together, they built a successful business that was a part of the Marshall community for many years. Evelyn will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
