Brittney Griner officially returns to the WNBA after her release from Russia.
ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss and MA Voepel reported Saturday that Griner has agreed to a deal with the Phoenix Mercury. She gets a one-year contract and will play for the Mercury during the 2023 season.
Griner, 32, missed the entire 2022 WNBA season after being arrested at a Russian airport for drug trafficking in February 2022.
She was sentenced to nine years in prison but was released in December in a prisoner exchange in which the United States agreed to free convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout in Russia.
Griner was drafted by the Mercury in 2013, forming eight All-Star teams with them and helping the team win the WNBA title in 2014.
The Mercury had shown Griner’s support throughout her tenure, and now she’s officially reunited them for the 2023 season, which begins May 19.
