The 25-megawatt plant, located near the US border, will be built in two phases. Pushed forward by a five-megawatt power plant purchase agreement with SaskPower, the plant is estimated to be able to produce enough electricity for 25,000 households when completed. DEEP Earth Energy Production Corp. is using oilfield drilling techniques to construct the power plant. Wells of approximately 3.5 kilometers depth and an additional three kilometers horizontally are being drilled — a process that will be familiar to workers in the oil and gas sector. The project holds the potential to revolutionize the renewable energy industry in Canada, as the application of these techniques to renewable energy is relatively new. The company has also acquired underground leases to support multiple power plants capable of generating more than 200 megawatts of electricity and is exploring the possibility of using a portion of its underground lease for underground carbon dioxide (CO2) storage. DEEPArth-0206-ph is a major milestone for the geothermal energy industry in Canada — an industry that has the potential to make a real impact on the sustainability of the country.
