BC Olympian Markus Thormeyer banned for 12 months for doping violation – Cranbrook Daily Townsman 1

“BC Olympian Markus Thormeyer Receives 12-Month Ban for Doping Violation”

Swimmer Markus Thormeyer has been banned for 12 months after accidentally ingesting a banned substance during a COVID-19 lockdown last year.

The Canadian Center for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced Friday (February 3) that Thormeyer – a 25-year-old two-time Olympian from Tsawwassen who holds multiple national records – was sanctioned after a urine sample was taken during training. In-competition doping control on January 19, 2022 revealed the presence of SARM LGD-4033, a Prohibited Anabolic Agent.

SARM LGD-4033 is designed to treat muscle wasting and age-related weakness and needs to be taken in liquid form by mixing drops of the substance with water. SARM is clear and does not discolor the water, nor does it noticeably change the taste.

Upon notifying CCES of the “Adverse Analytical Finding”, Thormeyer accepted the violation and a voluntary provisional suspension effective February 15, 2022.

Thormeyer and CCES also jointly requested a hearing to determine the appropriate period of ineligibility.

After a hearing on October 5, 2022, referee Yves Fortier confirmed that, having unknowingly ingested the prohibited substance, Thormeyer bore “no significant fault or negligence” for the violation.

Accordingly, Fortier concluded that a 12-month suspension period beginning February 15, 2022 — the date of Thormeyer’s provisional suspension — would be “fair, just, reasonable and reasonable.”

During this time, Thormeyer is ineligible to participate in any capacity, including through training with teammates, in any sport affiliated to the Canadian Anti-Doping Program.

His ban ends on February 14, 2023.

In his joint submission to the hearing with the CCES, Thormeyer said he unknowingly ingested the SARM while drinking from a water bottle at his partner Chad Poloni’s home while recovering from a bout of COVID-19.

Thormeyer said that while Poloni knew he had taken SARMs recreationally as part of his fitness regimen in the past, it was not until November 2021 that Poloni told him he had stopped taking the drug, and Thormeyer “fully admitted it.” trusted” that Poloni would tell him if he decided to use SARMs again.

In December of that year, the couple traveled to Hawaii for the New Year, with a scheduled return to Vancouver on January 5, 2022. However, Poloni was forced to remain in Hawaii after an inconclusive COVID test, and Thormeyer chose to stay in the case at He was sure that Poloni would stay because he didn’t want to infect his roommate.

Thormeyer tested positive on January 8 or 9 and was quarantined at Poloni’s home, where he stayed while he recovered from the illness. Poloni returned home on January 17 and resumed taking SARMs without telling Thormeyer.

Thormeyer is believed to have ingested SARMs on the evening of January 17 or 18 by drinking from Poloni’s water bottle next to the shared bed.

The joint filing noted that despite years of testing, Thormeyer never had an adverse analytical finding or an anti-doping rule violation.

It also highlighted his work outside of the pool, including the leadership role he has taken in the LGBTQI2S community since coming to public attention in 2016, and his academic success (he began his PhD in zoology at UBC two months after attending at the Tokyo Olympics). 2021).
