Bard: Google’s A.I. Chatbot Revolutionizing Online Communication
On Monday, Google announced an AI chatbot called “Bard” to compete with ChatGPT.
In the announcement(Opens in a new tab), Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that Bard is now available to “trusted testers” and will be available more widely “in the coming weeks.” Following the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in December 2022, the popularity of generative AI technology prompted Google executives to declare a “Code Red (Opens in a new Tab)” and strive to compete with its own AI technologies .

Like ChatGPT, Bard queries information from around the web to “deliver fresh, high-quality answers.”
The uses for Bard are wide-ranging as it uses all the information available on the internet. Bard is powered by a stripped down “lightweight” version of LaMDA, its AI language model technology. Pichai says this LaMDA model requires less processing power, which is easier to scale to more users and gets feedback faster. The testing phase will incorporate external feedback into Google’s own internal testing to “meet a high bar for quality, security and authenticity of real-world information.”

Along with Bard’s announcement, Google plans to add more AI-powered features to Google Search that will aggregate information on the search page and provide deeper insights into users’ searches.
So far, not much more is known about Bard and Google’s new AI products, but the search giant is hosting an event on February 8th. The event will announce news related to search and maps, and will “rethink how people search, explore and interact with information, making it more natural and intuitive than ever to find what you need,” reads the event description Whether that includes details on Bard and AI initiatives remains to be seen, but the race for chatbot dominance is undoubtedly on.
