Are the banks open on President’s Day 2023? List of banks remaining closed – NBC Chicago 1

Presidents Day, which is celebrated annually in honor of George Washington’s birthday, falls on Monday, February 20 this year.

Washington was sworn in as the first president in 1789 after leading American troops to victory over the British and establishing independence for the 13 colonies.

There’s also the story of Washington chopping down a cherry tree, which turns out to be just a fun little game made up by one of Washington’s biographers and not the truth.

Cherry tree or not, on the third Monday in February, we honor the (real-life) legacies of the Founding Father on Presidents Day.

For some, it’s an extra day to shop all the Presidents Day sales (not the time like President, uh, gift for retail therapy).

For others, the bonus day is the perfect excuse to plan a fun getaway like a cozy ski trip or a tropical beach vacation to escape the winter chill.

No worries if you don’t have big plans on the horizon. Sometimes an extra day of sleeping and catching up on errands is all it takes to recharge old batteries.

If that’s what you have on your register this Presidents Day, good news: most grocers, drugstores and other retailers are open on Mondays.

But since Presidents Day is a federal holiday, most schools, offices, and government agencies are closed for the day, including post offices. But what about banks? Read on to find out if banks are open or closed on Presidents Day.

Are the banks open on Presidents Day?

Although a handful of financial institutions are open on Presidents Day, a majority will be closed on the occasion of the holiday. This includes most banks, credit unions, and NYSE markets.

What does that mean? Well, you won’t be able to do business at most bank branches other than ATM transactions, to begin with.

This also means that any withdrawals or deposits made will not be published until at least the next business day (Tuesday, February 21) at the earliest.

This is because weekend days and public holidays do not count as working days. So be sure to plan ahead if you have any banking business to take care of.
